Athenian Dialogue (Option A)

Upstairs at the White House: My Life with the First Ladies by J. B. West

With Dialogue Leader Mary Lynne Stratta, TRMC, MMC, IIMC Past President and Athenian Fellow

Book description: J. B. West, chief usher of the White House, directed the operations and maintenance of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue—and coordinated its daily life—at the request of the president and his family. He directed state functions, planned parties, weddings and funerals, gardens and playgrounds, and extensive renovations; and, with a large staff, supervised every activity in the presidential home. For 28 years, first as assistant to the chief ush-er, then as chief usher, he witnessed national crises and triumphs, and interacted daily with six consecutive pres-idents and first ladies, as well as their parents, children and grandchildren, and houseguests—including friends, relatives, and heads of state. J. B. West, whom Jackie Kennedy called “one of the most extraordinary men I have ever met,” provides an absorbing, one-of-a-kind history of life among the first ladies. Alive with anecdotes ranging from Eleanor Roosevelt’s fascinating political strategies to Jackie Kennedy’s tragic loss and the personal struggles of Pat Nixon, Upstairs at the White House is a rich account of a slice of American history that usually remains behind closed doors.

J. B. West is very much like the city clerk in a municipality—we do it all. His leadership skills were phenomenal. His rise to the role of chief usher is interesting and, in many cases, could parallel how many city clerks come into cities in lower level positions and then rise to the position of city clerk. There are also fascinating snippets of the leadership characteristics, strengths and weaknesses of the first ladies from Eleanor Roosevelt to Pat Nixon. Hear-ing about them from a White House insider presents a different picture than the world has seen. To watch these first ladies struggle to juggle their state duties and demanding official schedule, as well as being a wife, mother, and daughter, shows us glimpses of work-life balance in its most rare form.

Athenian Dialogue (Option B)

The Culture Code: The Secrets of Highly Successful Groups by Daniel Coyle

With Dialogue Leader Lee Woodward, TRMC, MMC, Athenian Fellow

Book Description: In The Culture Code, Daniel Coyle goes inside some of the world’s most successful organiza-tions—including Pixar, the San Antonio Spurs, and U.S. Navy’s SEAL Team Six—and reveals what makes them tick. He demystifies the culture-building process by identifying three key skills that generate cohesion and cooperation, and explains how diverse groups learn to function with a single mind. Drawing on examples that range from internet retailer Zappos to the comedy troupe Upright Citizens Brigade to a daring gang of jewel thieves, Coyle offers specific strategies that trigger learning, spark collaboration, build trust, and drive positive change. Coyle unearths helpful stories of failure that illustrate what not to do, troubleshoots common pitfalls, and shares advice about reforming a toxic culture. Combining leading-edge science, on-the-ground insights from world-class leaders, and practical ideas for action, The Culture Code offers a roadmap for creating an environment where innovation flourishes, problems get solved, and expectations are exceeded. Culture is not something you are—it’s something you do. The Culture Code puts the power in your hands. No matter the size of the group or the goal, this book can teach you the principles of cultural chemistry that transform individuals into teams that can accomplish amazing things together.
